Ms. entitled, "Reminiscences of Peel Hall now the site of the Girard College for Orphans," signed W. Parker and dated 10 March 1838. He says that Oswald Peel, "who was said to have accumulated a large fortune by privateering during the war between England and France" [i.e., the Seven Years' War]," purchased the estate from the Penn family and built the Hall in 1754. It passed through several owners until it ended up belonging to the Parker family, from whom Stephen Girard purchased it in 1830.
